MARCH ANIMAL DRAWING LESSON AT LA SPECOLA

Saturday, March 6th was the first of my monthly animal drawing lessons. There were twenty enthusiastic students ranging in age from 5 to adult (including some experienced artists), and we had a great time! Here are some student photos and comments. Thank you again to all the participants for making it a success, and hope to see you all again on Saturday, April 3rd!

"I enjoyed drawing animals your way and I think you should show us how to draw other things like trees or plants" (Traduzione: "Mi é piaciuto disegnare animali in la tua manera e penso che dovresti insegnarci anche disegnare altri cose come alberi o pianti")

"I liked it but I think next time you should teach people to draw other animals such as birds" (Mi é piaciuto la lezione pero la prossima volta devi insegnare i studenti disegnare altri animali come gli ucelli")

E a me piace tanto disegnare, disegno sempre a scuola con i miei amici piú cari." (Translation: "This lesson was wonderful. I learned a lot, going around the museum was great, there were so many animals to draw and to see...monkeys, penguins, crocodiles, tigers, and kangaroos. I love to draw, I draw all the time at school with my best friends.")

"I've really enjoyed today's lesson and can clearly see the quality of my drawings improving as you helped me along. Thank you very much!!" Grazie mille!")

"Fantastic! Thank you for the help today Mike, will come back again, feel inspired and want to draw more already - will be in touch and recommend it to others too :^ )" (Traduzione: "Fantastica!

"I really like this class, and right after I leave I am going to buy a sketchbook (my best friend!)"

"I very much like the concept of 'drawing energy'. I also thought that his lesson was very helpful to me because now I have a 'punto di partenza'-a starting point when I want to draw a figure. And since I liked it so much I drew tons and tons of people and animals in my sketchbook, which as he said was my best friend. I was happy for him to have conceived this lesson in a natural history museum, because I had the opportunity to discover a lot of information about animals and the human body I didn't know. I hope it will continue."

"Hi Mike! I really appreciated your comments and immensely enjoyed the class" (Traduzione: "Ciao Mike!

"It was one of the most interesting lessons I've ever taken, although I've never done anything like it, I'll definitely be coming back next month. Thanks and best wishes." Grazie e auguri.")

Florence Sketch and Stroll Photos

This afternoon's Sketch and Stroll participants ranged from Accademia delle Belli Arti students, to Polimoda fashion design students, to Americans who have relocated to Florence permanently or semi-permanently. It was a great group and we had a lot of fun. Thank you to everybody for participating! Here's a comment from one participant: "That was such an enjoyable afternoon and so valuable too. I have avoided learning to draw for some silly reason and this was as painless a way to break the taboo as I could have imagined. Thank you so much for your help and pleasant way of teaching! I really hope to be able to do some more work with you"

Saturday Sketching and Watercolor

In the past few months I've had the pleasure of teaching a small group of students, which include a local Florentine (originally from Rome), and two American expats living in Florence. We've been having a lot of fun drawing and painting in the beautiful home and garden of our Italian hosts. We've also ventured out into the surrounding countryside which affords beautiful views of the city. Topics we've been discussing and practicing include value, color, and composition. We've also studied from past artists such as Turner, and the Macchiaioli group of Florentine painters who were active in the 19th C. Here are some of the works of my students...beautiful!

Post-Sketching Tour instructional support!

Every Sketching in Tuscany participant can take advantage of a wonderful and rare benefit: ongoing instruction after the Sketching Tour via email--at no cost!! This is an unusual opportunity and a good reason in itself to sign-up now for one of next summer's tours! This year's participants are already planning to take advantage of this great feature. They will do it by scanning and emailing drawings, then I print them and make corrections/suggestions, scan and email them back! I am offering this benefit because I believe the teacher/student interaction and relationship that we develop during our week in Tuscany should be allowed to continue (via this wonderful technology we have access to)...I am committed to assisting you on an ongoing basis!
