Group of families from Santa Barbara

Just recently I had the wonderful pleasure of conducting a lesson with a group of families visiting from Santa Barbara, California. Our lesson was in the great open-air classroom of the Loggia dei Lanzi next to Piazza Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, the Florence 'city hall' since medieval times. The group was varied in age, from four years old to bigger 'kids'. We all had a great time sketching, and also trying out some watercolors, too! Here are some comments:

"This experience with Mike was truly fabulous. My four year old son, ten year old daughter and her friends and the moms all learned and enjoyed the sketching. We will look at things with a fresh pair of eyes and notice shapes and dimensions. I will continue to keep the sketch pad and pencil at hand as we travel. Thank you!"

We had a great time drawing at the Archeology Museum this Saturday...here are some comments and photos!

The class was great, really enjoyed it. The tips and personal one-on-one advice was very helpful. The information/demo was very useful in regards to the steps in sketching. I was definitely able to reconsider perspective choices when choosing what to draw with the advice I was given. I would be more than happy to take more classes. Also beneficial - the small number of students made it very easy and more personal. Thank you!

I enjoyed today’s lesson. I thought it was productive in that it got me sketching again. I liked the location and the lesson/demo that Mike gave at the beginning
was helpful. I would definitely take another class. Thank you!

Palazzo Strozzi Thursday Evening Sketching / Giovedì Sera Sketch a Palazzo Strozzi

In November I began collaborating with Palazzo Strozzi to offer a new series of sketching lessons in the galleries. So far there have been two lessons for the Bronzino show, the first focusing on drawing the face, and the second on drawing the human figure. Both lessons were attended to capacity, with a maximum of 15 participants. The reviews were great and everyone really enjoyed the experience...especially me! It is a true honor to teach in this incredibly inspiring setting. The third lesson for the Bronzino show will be focused on drawing the draped figure, and will be held on Thursday, January 13th from 8pm to 10pm. A novembre comincai a collaborare con Palazzo Strozzi per offrire una nuova serie di lezioni di sketch nelle gallerie. Finora sono stati due lezioni per la mostra di Bronzino, la prima concentrato sul tema di disegnare il volto e la seconda su come disegnare la figura umana. Entrambi lezioni erano frequentati al capacità massima, con 15 partecipanti. Le recensioni erano molto positivi e tutti sono piaciuti la esperienza...più che altro io! E' una vera onore insegnare in questo posto incredibilmente ispirante. La terza lezione per la mostra di Bronzino si focalizzarà su disegnare la figura drappeggiata, e sarà tenuta giovedì il 13 gennaio dalle 20.00 alle 22.00. Mike Wiesmeier's "Palazzo Strozzi Sketching on Thursdays" was an excellent learning experience! He is a wonderful teacher and explained various concepts in a very simple manner. I look forward to the next lesson and would highly recommend it to anyone.

E' stato una lezione molto interessante e divertente, in cui Mike ci ha spiegato molto bene la struttura e anatomia del corpo. Ci ha spiegato molto bene di vedere la figura più fluida e stutturata di piccoli cilindri che aiuta molto a disegnare meglio. Sarò contenta di tornare e partecipare a la lezione di gennaio!

I enjoyed the event and would definitely come back. This was the first lesson I took with this drawing class and I already can tell you that I learned a lot. Hopefully after taking a few more classes with you my drawing skills will improve greatly. I look forward to your next class.

This summer I had the pleasure of doing a lesson with a family from Los Gatos, California. Here are some photos and a comment they sent me recently...

Mike, we can't thank you enough for such a fun and rewarding class. It made quite an impression on everyone in the family and we're still talking about it. It was so gratifying to see the kids open up and try something new, especially our 13-year old son who's a perfectionist tech-type and, thus, felt (previously) no affinity to art. With our varying ages and abilities, you were fantastic at gauging and accommodating our entire family's needs so well. Taking your class and sketching under the Loggia was just what we needed to get off the sightseeing treadmill and really look at the richness around us. Your class was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Florence! Thank you again!

Ci siamo divertiti a disegnare le scimmie il 4 settembre! Mi sentivo molto onorato ad avere tra gli studenti, un bambino che é venuto da Torino e tre che sono venuti da Roma! Recently I had the pleasure of doing a lesson with a guest of Riva Loft (www.rivalofts.com).
Hervé is an interior designer from France. We enjoyed spending two hours drawing architecture in Piazza Signoria, sometimes running for cover when it started to rain a bit. I really enjoyed my short time with Hervé and look forward to spending more time drawing together. Here is his comment about our lesson together:

NEW CITY SKETCHING CLASS! / NUOVO CORSO DI DISEGNO DELLA CITTA'!

Sto iniziando una nuova serie di lezioni di disegno, si chiama 'Disegno in Cittá'. Queste lezioni verrano tenute ogni
terzo sabato di ogni mese, ed ogni volta in un posto diverso. Il primo sará il 19 giugno, e ci incontriamo in Piazza

Saturday, March 6th was the first of my monthly animal drawing lessons. There were twenty enthusiastic students ranging in age from 5 to adult (including some experienced artists), and we had a great time! Here are some student photos and comments. Sabato, il 6 marzo é stato il primo di miei mensili corsi di disegno di animali. C'eranno veinte studenti entusiaste delle etá dal 5 anni fino ad adulti (comprese alcuni veri artisti), e abbiamo divertito tanto! Ecco sono alcune foto di studenti e anche commenti. Beginning on Saturday, March 6th, I will be offering animal drawing lessons every first Saturday of the month from 2pm to 4:30pm (14.00 to 16.30). Here's the flyer for the classes. I know it's a little small to read, so I'll tell you what it says...

What: animal drawing lessons

When: the first Saturday of every month from 2pm to 4:30pm
Quando: il primo sabato di ogni mese dalle 14.00 alle 16.30

Where: at 'La Specola' Museum in Florence, located at Via Romana, 17 (that's very close to Palazzo Pitti). 'La Specola' is a wonderful natural history museum with thousands of species of taxidermed animals in very good condition

Cost: 20euros per person per lesson (entrance fee to museum is not included, but you can get a six-month pass for only 10euros)

Why: it's fun to draw animals-especially when they don't move! Seriously, it is great opportunity to do studies of the animals from many vantage points

Recently, to reach the Florentine community, I've put an announcement on the website www.fiorentinisicresce.it This wonderful site provides information about activities and events for children and their parents. This afternoon's Sketch and Stroll participants ranged from Accademia delle Belli Arti students, to Polimoda fashion design students, to Americans who have relocated to Florence permanently or semi-permanently. It was a great group and we had a lot of fun. Thank you to everybody for participating! Here's a comment from one participant: "That was such an enjoyable afternoon and so valuable too. I have avoided learning to draw for some silly reason and this was as painless a way to break the taboo as I could have imagined. Thank you so much for your help and pleasant way of teaching! I really hope to be able to do some more work with you"

Join me and other sketching afficionados for a three hour sketch and stroll from Piazza Santissima Annunziata to Piazza Signoria. This introductory sketching tour is FREE, and all ages are welcome! Bring whatever art materials you like to use, and be sure to bring a friend. Absolutely no previous drawing experience is necessary! We will meet at the equestrian statue in Piazza Santissima Annunziata at 14.00 (2pm). Rain will NOT cancel (in that case, we'll be sure to break out our watercolors!). In the past few months I've had the pleasure of teaching a small group of students, which include a local Florentine (originally from Rome), and two American expats living in Florence. We've been having a lot of fun drawing and painting in the beautiful home and garden of our Italian hosts. We've also ventured out into the surrounding countryside which affords beautiful views of the city. Topics we've been discussing and practicing include value, color, and composition. We've also studied from past artists such as Turner, and the Macchiaioli group of Florentine painters who were active in the 19th C. Here are some of the works of my students...beautiful!

Every Sketching in Tuscany participant can take advantage of a wonderful and rare benefit: ongoing instruction after the Sketching Tour via email--at no cost!! This is an unusual opportunity and a good reason in itself to sign-up now for one of next summer's tours! This year's participants are already planning to take advantage of this great feature. They will do it by scanning and emailing drawings, then I print them and make corrections/suggestions, scan and email them back! I am offering this benefit because I believe the teacher/student interaction and relationship that we develop during our week in Tuscany should be allowed to continue (via this wonderful technology we have access to)...I am committed to assisting you on an ongoing basis!
